Tockwith celebrates the Coronation and marks an historic past at Regency Place

Cheers and renditions of God Save the King could be heard throughout Tockwith this weekend as the fervour of Coronation celebrations were felt throughout the village.

As a part of the celebrations, Tockwith Church organised a fun day including bouncy castle, ice cream, teas, coffees, and cakes, as well as a scarecrow trail encouraging visitors to hunt scarecrows scattered throughout the village.

On Coronation Day, and as a part of the trail, Regency Place played host to a scarecrow of special historical interest as it depicted Oliver Cromwell, victor in the battle of Marston Moor against the Royal troops in July 1644.

Tockwith was used as a staging post by Oliver Cromwell prior to this battle and he referred to Tockwith in his diaries when he said: “If heaven should be half as blessed as the fields of Tockwith, all those who should pass St. Peter’s Gate shall be met with joys unequalled”.

The village has played a small part in thousands of years of royal history and on a day of celebrations, and the crowning of the new king, Tockwith once again saw the appearance of Cromwell who himself turned down the chance to be officially named king in 1657.

Savills Sales Adviser at Regency Place, Jayne Gibson, commented: “It was wonderful to see the celebrations over the weekend in the village and it demonstrated the vibrant community that Tockwith has. At Regency Place, the Oliver Cromwell scarecrow created a lot of curiosity and interest and on Coronation Day taught young children in the local community about some of the history surrounding  the monarchy and Tockwith.”
